Renovation of Nord2 E+F ward, Universitätsspital Zurich (USZ)

In connection with the development of the construction area for Project Berthold phase 1, Universitätsspital Zurich (USZ) has planned the relocation of hospital beds in the NORTH and CENTRAL area of Universitätsspital Zurich. With the complete refurbishment and concentration of NORD2 ward on floors E and F as part of the «Renovation of ward Nord2 E+F» project, part of this transfer has been implemented.

The existing ward on floors E+F in building NORD2 was developed as a ward in 1992 on floors E and F but no longer meets the current requirements of USZ.

The conversion project includes the creation of 4 future-orientated wards with 140 beds, as well as treatment rooms for the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics, the ear, nose and throat surgery clinic, and the eye clinic. These cover a floor area of around 5,000 m2.

The renovation has been designed to optimise operational and functional procedures (interprofessional two-bed rooms / in accordance with the BERTHOLD platform concept). The aim of the conversion is to ensure commercial viability, patient comfort and improved medical care. The project is located in an inner-city area with limited space in the immediate vicinity of the sensitive hospital activities of Universitätsspital Zurich. Ward Nord2 on floors E and F will continue to operate during the entire construction period with corresponding protective measures for some areas. Due to the abovementioned circumstances, the renovation work is taking place in a difficult environment and is being carried out in stages. A planning team was commissioned on behalf of USZ to work out a feasibility study and a preliminary phase for the project to renovate ward Nord2 E+F. This pre-project stage was concluded on 12 March 2018. The completion date for the Nord2 E+F ward conversion project is spring 2021.
