The municipality of Val Mara has launched a competition with the goal of building a new 60-bed medical care home, divided into two care housing units, as well as a daytime social care center that will accommodate about 15 users.

The competition program calls for both indoor and outdoor collective spaces and community facilities that are accessible to the public. The project includes a car park with 130 parking spaces for residents and employees of the new facility as well as a civil defense shelter.

The competition area is located at the foot of the slopes of Monte Generoso, on the eastern shore of Lake Lugano. The site is located at the transition point between the town center and the residential expansion.

The new building is parallel to the hill, along Via Capeleta. This clear gesture defines the street space, generating a contrast with the open space of the Filanda courtyard, creating an empty, public space that follows the hill topography.

Longitudinally, the space finds a point of connection with the Filanda courtyard, relating an open space in a sequence that reinforces both the morphological characteristic of the site and the urban characteristic of development along the road axis.

The new park gathered between the building and the hill, can thus bring back memories of the space defined by former walls of the Filanda.
