IB, in collaboration with Hector Egger Gesamtdienstleistung, won the total service competition for the expansion of the school campus in Zufikon (Canton of Aargau), including a new school building and a double sports hall. The project aims to accommodate the growing demand for space while preserving and further developing the distinctive spatial qualities of the existing campus.

The urban heart of the site is the generous school courtyard with mature trees and open views across the sports fields toward the surrounding landscape. The two new buildings are positioned to define the courtyard along its southern edge, thereby further strengthening the spatial qualities of this shared outdoor space. The new school building continues the existing development along Schulstrasse as a freestanding, two-story volume. A deliberately designed gap between the new building and the existing Building C ensures permeability from the street to the courtyard and carries forward the site’s established urban structure.

The double sports hall is aligned parallel to the grass sports field and defines the southwestern edge of the courtyard. Its stepped massing mediates between different scales and creates a transition from the sports facilities to the school buildings.

Both new buildings feature painted timber façades that complement the existing structures while adding a restrained yet distinctive identity to the campus. A covered walkway connects the new buildings with the existing campus, providing weather-protected circulation. Generously landscaped outdoor areas, shade-providing trees, and the extension of the existing schoolyard ensure a high quality of stay, enable differentiated break areas for the various school levels, and encourage social interaction across the site.
