UTOPIA - The winners have been announced

On Monday last week the time has finally come - the winners have been awarded at the S AM.

On the occasion of our 100th anniversary, IB launched a student ideas competition for the next generation of architects. The task was to develop a utopia for the future learning.

Registration was open from February to May 2022, and 14 designs were submitted by the 15th of August 2022. On the 1st of September 2022, the jury gathered to evaluate the submitted ideas.

The jury consisted of renowned experts:

- Dr. Sabine von Fischer, TEC21 editor, owner of the Agentur für Architexte.
- Dr. Etna R. Krakenberger, Head of Teaching/Digital Officer Teaching University of Bern
- Pascal Posset, Landscape Architect BSLA, Hager Partner AG
- Shadi Rahbaran, Architect BSA, Rahbaran Hürzeler Architekten
- Andreas Ruby, Director S AM, Basel (edue to illness)

Internal jury, non-voting:

- Jürg Toffol, Partner, Member of the Executive Board, IB Basel
- Daniel Blum, Member of Site Management IB Basel, Head of Design IB Basel
- Karina Hüssner, Architect, Head of Business Development + Atelier IB

On the 31st of October 2022, the award ceremony took place at the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum in Basel, followed by a panel discussion. The event was accompanied musically by Sophie Luise Hage on the cello.

The international ideas competition for architecture students on the topic of UTOPIA will be continued regularly by IB in the future.

Result of the competition

The jury had a total of CHF 10’000 at its disposal to award the projects. In order to praise the diversity of approaches, the jury decided to distribute the prize money among the four winning proposals in the ranking list as follows:

1st PLACE

The project FUSILLI by Laura Die Nardo + Laura Imperiali + Charlotte Neyenhuys from the ETH Zurich (CH) is awarded CHF 4'000.

2nd PLACE

The project ISOLE by Senia Mischler + Franziska Beer from the ETH Zurich (CH) is awarded CHF 3’000.

3rd PLACE

The project Fk24091994IEX by Florent Kuqi from the TU Carolo-Wilhelmina Braunschweig (DE) is awarded CHF 2'000.

4th PLACE

The project Le Circle Permanente by Anna Zurbrügg + Rebecca Slehofer + Eva Schneider from the FHNW Muttenz (CH) is awarded CHF 1'000.

Panel discussion

The UTOPIA award ceremony was followed by a panel discussion on the topic of utopia with Regula Lüscher, owner of «Stadtmacherin» and former Berlin Senate Building Director/State Secretary, and Saikal Zhunushova, architect and founder of Oekofacta. The discussion was moderated by Andreas Ruby, Director of the S AM Swiss Architecture Museum.
