UTOPIA – Student Competition

On the occasion of its 100-year anniversary, IB is launching a student ideas competition worth a total of 10,000 Swiss francs as a gift to the next generation of architects. The aim is to develop a utopia for the learning of the future.

Since its founding exactly 100 years ago, IB has been addressing architectural questions about shaping the future. Our founding fathers, Otto Rudolf Salvisberg and his protégé Otto Brechbühl, had developed a utopia of learning that led to first place in the competition for the Muesmatt Institute Building of the University of Bern in 1928. This is the inspiration for the launch of the competition: What is the strongest impression of the attitude to life, what is the organism, in Salvisberg's and Brechbühl's sense, for the future of learning? As an ideas competition for students, this question is explicitly addressed to the coming generation of architects - because their visions will shape our future.

The evaluation of the submitted ideas is carried out by an external jury:

  • Dr. Sabine von Fischer, Editor NZZ, Owner Agency for Architecture
  • Dr. Etna R. Krakenberger, Head of Teaching, University of Bern
  • Pascal Posset, Landscape Architect BSLA, Hager Partner AG
  • Shadi Rahbaran, Architect BSA, Rahbaran Hürzeler Architects
  • Andreas Ruby, Director S AM, Basel

The closing date for entries was the 20th of May 2022.
