Preserving Historic Fabric with Care and Precision
The second phase of the renovation of Hermesbühl School in Solothurn is well underway. Behind the scaffolding, extensive work is being carried out on the roof and façade to ensure the long-term preservation of this nearly 120-year-old historic building.
Since April, sections of the roof have been carefully opened and repaired. The existing double layer of traditional clay roof tiles is being removed with great care, and around 75 percent of the historic tiles can be restored and reused. At the same time, damaged areas are being repaired, while a new roofing membrane and improved ventilation are being added to upgrade the roof structure.
The façade and historic building components are also receiving careful specialist attention. Natural stone surfaces are being cleaned, historic paint finishes are being uncovered and reinstated, and metal elements are being restored. Wherever possible, original building fabric is being retained; replacement is limited to areas where structural requirements make it unavoidable. Particular attention is being paid to the many handcrafted details that define the building’s character. This careful approach will help ensure that the distinctive identity of Hermesbühl School is preserved for future generations.
As construction progresses, new findings and challenges continue to emerge. Together with all project partners, tailored solutions are being developed on an ongoing basis, always guided by the overall renovation strategy.
