First Prize in the Design–Build Competition for the Expansion of the Zufikon School Campus
The winning proposal, “Z’nüni öpfel,” includes a new school building and a double gymnasium. It responds to the growing demand for space while preserving and thoughtfully enhancing the distinctive spatial qualities of the existing campus.
At the heart of the site is a generous schoolyard with mature trees and open views across the sports fields toward the surrounding landscape. The new buildings are carefully positioned to maintain and reinforce this defining quality.
The new school building continues the existing development along Schulstrasse as a freestanding, two-story volume. The double gymnasium is aligned parallel to the grass sports field, enclosing the schoolyard to the southwest.
Both new buildings feature painted timber facades and are connected to the existing structures by a covered walkway. The extension of the schoolyard, which carries forward the existing tree canopy, offers high-quality outdoor spaces and a variety of sheltered areas tailored to the different age groups of the Zufikon school campus.
