The renovation of the La Tourelle residential complex in Geneva was recently featured in Prestige Magazine. From 2018 to the end of 2024, Itten+Brechbühl SA has led the architectural design and planning for the renovation of 415 housing units at La Tourelle, a residential complex owned by the UBS (CH) Property Fund – Léman Residential “Foncipars.”
Carried out in collaboration with Steiner Construction SA, the large-scale project was completed at the end of 2024.
Originally built between 1965 and 1973 by a renowned collective of Geneva-based architects (Paul Waltenspühl, Georges Brera, Georges Berthoud, Claire and Oscar Rufer), the complex is a key example of the evolution of collective housing in Geneva and is listed in the canton’s architectural inventory.
The project aimed to preserve the architectural identity of this landmark while upgrading it to meet today’s standards for comfort and energy performance.
The scope of the renovation included:
Thanks to this sensitive and effective approach, the buildings retain their original character while meeting contemporary residents' expectations.
Now in the process of receiving SNBS Gold Building certification, La Tourelle exemplifies how heritage conservation, environmental performance, and quality of life can go hand in hand.
This project proves that a balance can be struck between CO₂ reduction, heritage preservation, and economic viability.
