Omega O1, Biel BE
The signature of Shigeru Ban is visible in every last detail of O1. His design spans the rooms of the various production departments, quality assurance, social areas, storage logistics, as well as the offices for ancillary services. From along an educational route through the building, high-quality glass walls give visitors insights into the production without disturbing it. The clear geometry of O1 is broken by the arched outer staircase and the cone-shaped stainless steel chimneys, which were manufactured in one piece, transported, and then mounted. The building is erected in a timber framing technique around a concrete core, in which the three-story high-bay warehouse is installed. The production processes run top to bottom; conveyor belts transport material to the work spaces. Vibration and dust had to be kept to an absolute minimum to prevent any interference with the precision mechanical work.
