Construction of new campus for Bern University of Applied Sciences, Biel/Bienne
54 firms from home and abroad took part in the open competition to construct the new Biel/Bienne campus at the Bern University of Applied Sciences.
The jury was unanimous in awarding 9th place / 8th prize to IttenBrechbühl's "Five Friends" project in June 2015.
A contemporary urban university is to be constructed on the central site near the station which will meet the highest standards in terms of urban planning, architecture, operating conditions, cost-effectiveness and ecology. The new campus represents a milestone for the development of the town of Biel.
The project proposes an urban university campus with the square acting as its centrepiece. It will offer access to the main building and to 3 further houses. The new urban building block will pick up on the dimensions and typical features of its surroundings, close the perimeter block and with its main building and plaza it will present a clear face to the town. The 4 buildings making up the campus reveal the same basic typology although they differ in the detail with the result that each building will retain its own identity within the ensemble.
