Competition for New Appenzell Cantonal Hospital
The new health center of Appenzell, which replaced the historic hospital, derives its identity from the immediately surrounding environment typical for Appenzell at the crossing to an area of spread-out settlements. With its size, it adapts to the growing surroundings and reflects the needs of the population. The concept is strictly use-oriented. The structure expresses and is based on the architectural culture of Appenzell. The stone construction as well as the facades, which are arranged in typical rows of windows and balustrade panels, bear witness to this. The different height of the panels combines two floors visually – a further reference to the typically two-story houses of the Appenzell region.
